Weiss Family Genealogy (Use Edit/find for a particular name)

G0.0 Smelig Byelacherkevski (Samuel) b 1825 Married Freda Minna (Mani( Chudarofsky. He owned fruit boats on the Dniper River and a mill(Sons David and Morris, who was the father of Meyer Weis,.)
1.0 David Byelacherkovsky b 1852-1916. Kaniev, Ukraine married his Ist cousin Reva Chudarofsky. (Brothers: Morris , Moe and Joseph) Occ: accountant. cashier in a lumber mill.

Kaniev is a small town near Kiev (beyond the pale where Jews were allowed to live as they were forbidden to live in large cities such as Kiev). It is near Chernobel where the nuclear energy plant melted down contaminating residents and near Babi Yar where the Nazis machine gunned down the Jews of Kiev and vicinity into a ravine in 1942. A yahrzeit list of the area lists several Byelacherkevsky's among the victims. (The name Belaya Cherkov translated means White Church but Jews called it Black Church because of the rampant antisemitism there during czarist Russia)

Some of the Chudarofsky family emigrated to Philadelphia and changed their name to Ivker. Milton Ivker was a Phildelphia urologist in the 1960's. He had children Richard Ivker and Sharon.
G2.0 G2.1 Jacob Weiss b 8/4/77-1957 He took the name Weiss because his cousin Meyer Weiss was already established in Milwaukee. Immigrated 1904 b +/- 1875 m Dora Wolinsky (see Dora Wolinsky Weiss (Dvossi) for their children } Dora’s mother was a Baronofsky (see below) from Berezevka. Russia., who married Joseph Wolinski, who died young of Tuberculosis. A sister of her mother Hadassah Wolinsky (Edassi) raised Dora after her mother was killed in a fire.

When Jacob came to Ellis Island he gave his name as Weiss , rather than Byelacherkevski , since his cousin Meyer Weiss who immigrated earlier could not spell Byelacherkevski so he translated and shortened the Russian (White Church) to Yiddish for White.
He married Devorah (Dora) Wolinsky, Nahama Byealacherchevsky introduced her bro in law Jacob to her sister Dora. Jacob emigrated through the port of Philadelphia in 1907. (Siblings Edasi Chakass, Eta Benn. Ethel Zion,, Rachel, Mani ,and Pearl ,who lived in Kiev)
As was the frequent custom, Dora and the children followed several years later after he had earned the money for their passage. That's why the old tin type family portraits had no men in them. They were taken to send to the US for the fathers to see the children's growth. Nowadays the same thing happens because the father is taking the picture.

Birthdates are far from exact because it was not a Jewish custom to celebrate birthdays and there were no birth certificates. Children's ages were calculated by whether they were born close to a holiday such as Pesach or Rosh Hashonah and often the year was not recorded. Keeping records made for problems with the government concerning taxes and conscription.

Jacob quipped that his accountant father was ambidextrous as he could keep books for his employer with one of his hands and books for the government with the other.

G3.1 Marion (Meriam in Hebrew, Merka in Russian) Shulkin .11/10/ 1902 1997.
Named after her aunt, Merka Wolinski, who raised Marion's mother Dora after Dora's mother was killed in a fire) Married Joseph Shulkin a pharmacist in 1924 A Chicago Rabbi, a Baronofsky cousin., performed the service.
An oldest child and a buffer for her parents (who didn't speak fluent English) with the New world, she was programmed early on to be a caretaker. She was the matriarch for much of the Milwaukee peripheral family.
She kept a "knippel" in postal savings, (small sums of money her husband didn't know about.) After 40-50 years, the knippel had grown to tens of thousands of dollars. When she finally told him about it, his annoyance was dissipated by having the extra money.
G4.1 Richard Shulkin b. 9/19/25 (Yidel David Baer after Edassi Wolinski, and great g.f. David, ) married Sydelle Landfield.
Email: Quizkid1000@aol.com because Sydelle had been a Quiz kid on a radio show as a child.

During the depression Marion Shulkin worked 8am to 10pm 7 days a week in Joe's neighborhood drugstore. She delegated child care to unmarried pregnant women from the House of the Good Shepherd who worked for room and board. They came at about 5 months of pregnacy and left, going into labor often during the night, when the children were asleep so they couldn't say goodbye. They were loving good women born to soon into a rigid society. Richard and Mark (a child of abandonment) think of them fondly.

James was not circumcised in a ritual briss. Because there had been a deception in brother Robert's briss when he also was not circumcized in the ritual ceremony, the family got a ruling from the very pious Rabbi Twerski that James could be circumcised by any Jewish Doctor who was of good character. Robert was mistakenly circumcised with the Gentile infants before his Briss and the hospital planned to covered up the error by substituting another baby for him at the Briss ceremony.

Rona Gahr adds the following :

Dear Mark: I talked to Laurie a few weeks ago, about her and Victoria Rutter's names in your book. They are cool about it. They are totally out of the closet and not at all ashamed about being a gay couple. They were actually formally married in Vermont. And they had a large reception in Madison a few years ago.

My granddaughter, Elise, was 3 1/2 at the time of the wedding. She went back to Raleigh and sat in the 'talking chair' at her preschool to tell her story about the wedding she attended. in Madison. Her teacher recorded the following:

Title: ELISE WENT TO A WEDDING

Text: "I went to a wedding
I danced at the wedding.
I wore a pretty dress
The bride wore a long black dress.
They were two brides."

I stumbled across this blog -- I am Sharon Zion Zindler, daughter of Larry Zion.

Is there any more information about the family?
